Calgary, Extreme Cold Arrives this Weekend. Be Prepared!

As we approach the weekend of January 31 to February 2, 2025, Calgary is set to experience a significant drop in temperatures accompanied by light snowfall. Residents should prepare for the coldest conditions of the season thus far.

Friday, January 31: The day will start with scattered flurries in the morning, leading to variable cloudiness. Temperatures will be colder than recent days, with a high of -4°C and a low of -9°C. It's advisable to dress warmly and be cautious of potentially slippery sidewalks due to the morning flurries.

Saturday, February 1: Conditions will become windier and very cold. Snow and flurries are expected in the afternoon, with accumulations of up to 1 cm. The high will reach -9°C, while the low will plummet to -25°C. The combination of wind and low temperatures will result in a significant wind chill factor, making it feel even colder. Limit time spent outdoors, and ensure pets are adequately protected from the harsh conditions.

Sunday, February 2: The cold snap intensifies, with a high of -22°C and a low of -26°C. The morning will feature a mix of sun and clouds, transitioning to partly cloudy skies in the evening. These temperatures are well below Calgary's average for this time of year, so take necessary precautions to stay warm.

Preparation Tips:

  • Dress in Layers: Multiple layers provide better insulation and allow for adjustments as needed.

  • Protect Extremities: Wear hats, gloves, and scarves to prevent frostbite.

  • Limit Outdoor Exposure: With temperatures this low, frostbite can occur in minutes. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks indoors.

  • Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Ensure that elderly neighbors and those without adequate heating are safe and warm.

  • Vehicle Preparedness: Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent fuel lines from freezing, and carry an emergency kit in your car.

Stay informed by monitoring local weather updates, and prioritize safety during this extreme cold spell.
